Lee Cronin's The Mummy (2026): Ending Explained

Nope (2022)

2022 •130 min •Horror•Science Fiction•Thriller •Directed by Jordan Peele
The ending in 30 seconds

Forget bandaged pharaohs and Brendan Fraser adventure. Cronin's The Mummy is an R-rated possession horror about the Cannon family, whose daughter Katie was kidnapped in Egypt eight years earlier and is found alive inside a sarcophagus. Katie returns home to New Mexico, but what came back is a vessel for an ancient demon known as the "Destroyer of Families." The ending is a role reversal: her father Charlie takes the demon into himself to save her, and the film closes with the family turning the curse back on the woman who started it all.

What happened in Nope?

In Aswan, a woman known only as the Magician and her family keep a sarcophagus in a basement beneath their home. When it is opened, the mummy inside awakens and kills her husband with a hook through the jaw. In Cairo, American journalist Charlie Cannon and his wife Larissa live with their children, including young Katie, who plays with a neighbor girl named Layla. The Magician uses Layla to groom Katie with sweets, then conjures a scarab from a nectarine, chants a spell, and abducts the unconscious girl. A sandstorm blocks Charlie's pursuit. Local police suspect the parents, and Detective Dalia Zaki is left with no clues. The family returns to America. Eight years later, Katie is found in a sarcophagus after a plane crash near the Magician's estate. Frail, pale, and changed, she is brought home to Albuquerque. Katie's behavior grows violent and supernatural. She attacks Larissa's mother Carmen, sheds skin and blood, and gradually turns her siblings against the family. Charlie finds ancient writing grafted into Katie's skin. A hieroglyphics expert translates it as a spell used to bind a demon that sows discord and murder inside households. Katie kills Carmen, staging it to look like suicide, and later feeds on her body inside the coffin at the funeral. Charlie decodes Morse code Katie taps out with her jaw, proof that the real Katie is still conscious inside. It leads Zaki to Layla.

What happened at the end of Nope?

Zaki tracks Layla's family to Egypt, shoots the Magician's cult into submission, and gets Layla to switch sides. Layla shows her a home video revealing the truth: the Magician's family has held a generations-old duty to imprison the demon inside a chosen innocent child, sealed in a wrapped sarcophagus. They moved the demon out of the mummy in the opening scene and into Katie. When flooding threatened their valley, they tried to fly the sarcophagus out by plane, and the demon caused the crash, freeing itself.

What does the ending of Nope mean?

Back in New Mexico, the finale erupts. Katie's brother Seb, already under her influence, frees her. Carmen's corpse rises and attacks Zaki, who is flown in with the evidence and ends up with a scorpion tail bursting through her throat. Charlie is beaten by Katie in her room. He tells Zaki to recite the spell from the video and transfer the demon into him instead. The spell works: Katie vomits the demon out, and it possesses Charlie. It is a sacrifice for a father who spent eight years convinced he failed to protect his child.

The final scenes show the aftermath. Katie, scarred but healing, communicates with her father through Morse code from the basement, which is now covered in the binding spell. Then Larissa and Zaki take a wrapped, restrained Charlie to the prison where the Magician is held. Larissa sedates the Magician, and they repeat the ritual, moving the demon from Charlie into her. Charlie is freed. The Magician becomes the new vessel, trapped inside the cell.

Is the ending of Nope happy or sad?

Grim, gory, and vengeful, with a cathartic final scene that turns the victim's family into the ones holding the leash.

Does Katie Cannon survive at the end of Nope?

Survives, freed of the demon but scarred.

What happened to Charlie Cannon?

Survives after temporarily becoming the demon's host, freed in the prison scene.

What happened to Larissa Cannon?

Survives.

What happened to Seb and Maud?

Survive; both fall under the demon's influence but recover with Katie.

What happened to Detective Dalia Zaki?

Survives, even after the scorpion attack, and helps with the final ritual.

What happened to Carmen (Larissa's mother)?

Killed by Katie, then briefly reanimated during the finale.

What happened to the Magician?

Captured and imprisoned, then becomes the demon's new host.

What happened to Layla?

Survives, having turned against her mother; her later fate is not shown.

What happened to Gamal (the Magician's husband)?

Killed by the mummy in the opening scene.

Who is the "real" Mummy in this movie?

There isn't just one. The demon inside the original sarcophagus, Katie as its vessel, Charlie wrapped for the final ritual, and the Magician as the last host all fill the role in turn.

Why does the demon need a child as a host?

The Magician explains that a pure, innocent child is the best vessel, which is why her family targeted Katie and, by implication, other children before her.

Is Katie fully back to normal at the end?

She survives and is healing with her siblings, but she is visibly scarred, and the film treats her recovery as an ongoing process rather than a clean reset.

What actually happened to Layla?

Layla turns on her mother and helps Zaki, but the film never shows where she ends up afterward, which leaves her open as a possible future keeper of the ritual.

Why did the Magician's family try to move the sarcophagus by plane?

Their valley was due to flood, so they needed to relocate it. The choice of a plane, rather than a truck, is one of the film's unanswered plot questions.

Could the Magician's imprisonment keep the demon contained for good?

It is contained for now, but the film shows the demon needs a human host that eventually breaks down, so the risk of it escaping again is built into the premise.

4Post Credits

Should you stay in your seat?

No post-credits scene

Does it set up a sequel? It closes the story instead of teasing a sequel, though the demon being loose in a new host leaves theoretical room for one.

Is there anything after the credits? There is no mid-credits or post-credits scene. The prison scene works as the film's true epilogue and plays like a stinger that was moved in front of the credits. The prison scene was a reshoot. The original cut ended with Charlie doomed as the demon's vessel, and Jack Reynor has said the change was made after early test screenings. The added scene was his one day in full mummy makeup.

5Hidden Details

Foreshadowing, clues and easter eggs you might have missed.

Easter egg

The title "Mummy"

The title "Mummy" is deliberately shifting. It first refers to the demon-bound figure in the sarcophagus, then Katie, then Charlie wrapped in bandages, and finally the Magician herself.

Easter egg

The dying canary

The dying canary at the Magician's home is a small omen: something in the house is already draining life before the sarcophagus is even opened.

Easter egg

Chocolate wrappers

Chocolate wrappers left in Katie's yard are the first clue that someone was grooming her, and they tie directly back to the candy Layla used as bait.

Easter egg

Katie's jaw-clacking Morse code

Katie's jaw-clacking Morse code looks like a possession tic until Charlie decodes it, revealing the real Katie fighting back from inside.

Link to another movie/book/franchise

The coyotes

The coyotes that appear when Carmen dies are a nod to The Omen, a signal that Cronin is borrowing from the possession-horror canon.

Easter egg

The plane crash

The plane crash that frees the demon is the cult's own escape plan backfiring, a cruel irony for a family that spent generations trying to contain it.

Dialogue clue

The Magician's claim

The Magician's claim that her family has used dozens of vessels over centuries turns Katie's story into one entry in a much longer line of victims.

Easter egg

Reynor's comment

Reynor's comment that the Mummy legacy is "a framing device" points to what the film is really about: a father grappling with his failure to protect his child.

Easter egg

Charlie becoming the Mummy

Charlie becoming the Mummy in the final scene literally puts the actor in the makeup worn by earlier Mummy icons, a wink at the series' legacy.
