Hope (2026): Ending Explained

Hope (2026) · 호프

2026 •157 min •Science Fiction•Mystery•Action •Directed by Na Hong-jin
The ending in 30 seconds

Hope opens as a monster movie and ends as something much stranger: a first-contact tragedy about a grieving alien family. Police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae start out hunting a "creature" terrorizing the isolated village of Hope Harbor, only to learn the "monster" is an alien mother searching for her dead child, a child a local villager, Yangbae, killed and hid earlier in the story. The film ends with the surviving humans regrouping in confusion while the aliens, having recovered the child's body, speak of reviving it and holding onto a new "hope."

What happened in Hope?

Hope Harbor, a remote coastal village near the Korean DMZ, is cut off from the outside world after wildfires destroy roads, power, and communication. Locals believe a tiger, then a monster, is attacking the town, police chief Bum-seok and officer Sung-ae are sent to investigate. Sung-ki, thought dead after being struck fleeing the creature, is left behind by the group. As the human death toll rises, the town's panic curdles into infighting, with the humans doing as much damage to each other as the "monster" does. Late in the film, it's revealed the creature isn't a mindless monster: it's an alien, part of a small stranded family whose spacecraft (described by Na Hong-jin as a warship) went down near the village. The reveal recontextualizes everything: the aliens, including a figure named Ku'er and an alien woman, Ma'veyyo, are shown to be intelligent, emotional beings, not animals, and they are searching for their child, Kali. It's revealed that Yangbae, one of the villagers, killed and stuffed Kali earlier in the story, mistaking the alien child for a monster, meaning the "victims" of the alien attacks were, in a sense, the ones who struck first. A tense final standoff turns into a massacre; Sung-ki survives by escaping on horseback just as Bum-seok and reinforcements arrive with a full police armory.

What happened at the end of Hope?

In the climax, the surviving humans and the grieving alien family collide in the fallout of Yangbae's killing of Kali. The "monster hunt" framing the audience has been trained on for most of the runtime collapses: the true perpetrators were the humans, and the aliens' rampage was closer to a parent's desperate, grief-fueled search.

What does the ending of Hope mean?

By the end, Kali's body is in human hands, and the aliens, who reference "moli," a unit of time, make clear there's only a limited window left to revive him. The final scene finds the alien family speaking of a new "hope" for reviving their child, while the surviving humans, dazed and traumatized, don't fully grasp what just happened or why. Nothing is resolved: the alien threat isn't defeated, Hope Harbor is devastated, and the fate of Kali's revival is left open. Na Hong-jin has said he trimmed a much longer, denser script down to fit a single film, and has floated the idea of expanding Hope into a trilogy, which is why the ending plays less like a conclusion and more like the midpoint of a much larger story.

Is the ending of Hope happy or sad?

Bittersweet and deliberately ambiguous, a rescue and a loss in the same breath, with a trilogy clearly being set up.

Does Sung-ki survive at the end of Hope?

Presumed dead after being struck while fleeing, but survives, escaping on horseback; later confirmed alive in the post-credits scene.

What happened to Bum-seok?

Survives, arriving with police reinforcements in the final act.

What happened to Yangbae?

The villager whose killing of the alien child Kali sets the tragedy in motion; his fate is tied to the film's "perpetrator becomes victim" twist.

What happened to Kali?

The alien child; already dead before the story's midpoint, his body is recovered by the humans by the end, with the aliens hoping to revive him.

What happened to the alien family (including Ku'er and Ma'veyyo)?

Survive, though grieving and still searching for a way to save Kali.

What happened to Hope Harbor as a whole?

Devastated; many townspeople are killed over the course of the film's escalating conflict.

4Post Credits

Should you stay in your seat?

🎬 Post Credits: 1 Scene

1 post-credits scene.

Scene 1 · Post Credits

What happens: Yes, there is one scene, placed after the first block of credits rather than at the very end.

Does it set up a sequel? It doesn't directly tease a sequel plot, but it reinforces the film's "survival without full resolution" tone and leaves the door open for his story to continue.

Is there anything after the credits? It shows Sung-ki, who appeared to have died in the final chase, alive and limping up an empty road. He's lost a shoe and the barrel of his rifle is bent, using it as a makeshift cane. It confirms his survival is real (not a dream or vision) but leaves his situation, alone, injured, off-camera from the other survivors, unresolved.

5Hidden Details

Foreshadowing, clues and easter eggs you might have missed.

Reference

The title "Hope"

The title "Hope" doubles as the name of the fictional village (Hope Harbor) and a thematic statement about renewal, Na Hong-jin has said the name was inspired by a real, deserted village he encountered while traveling.

Easter egg

The wildfires that isolate the town

The wildfires that isolate the town aren't just a survival-horror device, they mirror the story's larger theme of communities cut off from outside perspective, mirroring how the villagers are also cut off from the truth about the "monster."

Easter egg

The early "tiger" rumor

The early "tiger" rumor before the creature is properly seen is the first of several perspective shifts the film uses, tiger, then monster, then grieving parent, each one forcing the audience to recalibrate what they're watching.

Reveals the twist

Yangbae killing and stuffing Kali

Yangbae killing and stuffing Kali is shown earlier in the story as a minor, almost throwaway act of cruelty, only recontextualized later as the true inciting incident for everything that follows.

Easter egg

The word "moli,"

The word "moli," used by the aliens late in the film, is confirmed to refer to a unit of time, tied directly to the urgency of the climax (a limited window to revive Kali).

Foreshadowing

The aliens' warship origin

The aliens' warship origin is never fully explained on-screen, a deliberate loose thread director Na Hong-jin has confirmed hints at a larger galactic conflict for a possible sequel/trilogy.

Foreshadowing

Sung-ki's survival

Sung-ki's survival is foreshadowed by the film declining to show his death on-screen, audiences see him struck and fall, not confirmed dead, which pays off in the post-credits scene.

Easter egg

Genre-shifting structure

critics and the director alike have pointed to Jaws and Alien as touchstones for the film's early "unseen creature" stretch, before it pivots hard into first-contact sci-fi.

Link to another movie/book/franchise

The film's Cannes cut ran slightly longer

The film's Cannes cut ran slightly longer (160 minutes) than the theatrical release (156 minutes), suggesting trimmed connective material that may resurface in later cuts or sequels.

Na Hong-jin has publicly discussed a trilogy structure

Na Hong-jin has publicly discussed a trilogy structure , meaning several of the film's dangling threads (the aliens' full backstory, the warship, Kali's revival) are intentional sequel setup rather than oversights.
